The Personal Leadership Development Class helps participants develop individual leadership skills by matching them with nationally recognized leadership coaches and introducing them to top Triangle leaders. Unlike most leadership programs, each participant has a highly customized experience working with a leadership coach in a small group setting in each class. An individual will focus on a personal project, or role in an organization, or a situation that requires "gaining willing followers," which will be the basis of their work at each session. This series meets in mostly one location, the RBC Center, Raleigh, with the last class and graduation at Bay 7 at American Tobacco in Durham. This is not the regional class that moves around the Triangle for each meeting. Graduates will join the 500 plus alumni family of "Goodmon Fellows."

Testimonial from a graduate of last year's class-Edwin Jeffords, United Way of the Greater Triangle
What I assumed…
- I assumed we would have book-taught leadership with reading assignments, homework, and reports.
- I assumed speakers each week would have good stories, but wouldn’t really apply to me.
- I assumed we would focus on business and management of co-workers and staff, not personal development.
- I assumed we would have a lot of ‘in theory’ teachings that would sound great in the classroom, but probably wouldn’t apply to my ‘real world.’
- I assumed we would have one leadership guru who would impart on us our magical leadership abilities each class.
- And finally, I assumed we would all come to attend lectures, classes, and trainings, and our relationships would end there.
What really happened was...
- I found out that leadership starts with the individual, in this case, me.· A book is great, but what we practiced in Leadership Triangle is far more valuable as a learning tool.
- Each speaker we had, spoke to me personally, and their stories gave me inspiration and hope for my personal journey in life and in work.
- We focused on individual habits & qualities to improve ourselves, thereby making the people around us better people, and more willing followers.
- Our coaching was ALL practical advice that I could instantly use to solve problems at work and at home.
- There was no guru, instead, a fantastic group of coaches who wanted us to succeed· in our own small steps each class.
- Finally, we are not just classmates or conference attendees.· Many of my relationships in this class have already, and will continue to exist outside of Leadership Triangle.
Overall, I was completely wrong about 99% of my assumptions, and for that I am eternally grateful.” |
